On the red carpet in Cannes 2008
15 October 2008 15:51

Cannes is hosting the 61st edition of the most famous, eclectic film festival in the world. Until the 25th of May, actresses, actors, film directors, producers, models, artists, singers, celebrities and more will all allow themselves to be photographed on its red carpet, and their images will be immortalised by hundreds of photographers and TV cameramen. In 2007, a total of 3,611 secured accreditation.

Everything’s news in Cannes, especially who’s there and everything about their image and styling. Evening gowns, hair styles, makeup, jewellery and of course shoes. Sandals, shoes, boots… nothing goes unnoticed despite the fact that the ladies tend to wear long evening gowns.

Cannes sets the trends. This is one of the most important fashion shows outside the major industry events, and it is a prime chance for actors and artists to model garments by the great fashion designers. There is no question that the venue that attracts the most attention is the Palace of Festivals. Before it, the following will strike smiling poses this year: Gwyneth Paltrow and Joaquin Phoenix, who co-star in James Gray’s Two Lovers; Angelina Jolie, whose shoes will receive special attention as she is well into her pregnancy and is there to present the latest film by Clint Eastwood, The Exchange; Cate Blanchett, who co-stars in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull along with Harrison Ford and Karen Allen, to be pre-released on May 18th. Outside the competition are Penélope Cruz, Scarlett Johansson and Javier Bardem with Vicky, Cristina, Barcelona.

The team from the film that opened the festival, Blindness, by Brazilian director Fernando Meirelles, is in Cannes. Julianne Moore worn YSL's classic pumps, Gael García Bernal, Danny Glover and the director himself have already appeared before the media. So has the jury, of course. In this 61st edition, it is presided over by actor and director Sean Penn, and its members include American actress Natalie Portman.

The first appearances on the red carpet have given us a glimpse of Eva Longoria wearing Jimmy Choo's Clue model, Gillian Anderson with Jimmy Choo's Aim and Natalie Portman showing off Sergio Rossi's Angelicas.

Year after year, the film festival has grown in prestige, backed by its philosophy of plurality and artistic and cultural vanguard. Its history dates back to 1939, when the French Minister of Education and Art, Jean Zay, suggested holding a film festival. Zay’s idea had to wait until the end of World War II, and on 20th September 1946 the International Film Festival opened up its doors for the first time in the Cannes Casino, which was thus sentenced to always serve as the venue of this film event.

In 2005 she was able to share her love for shoes in the movies. She played the role of Maggie Feller in In Her Shoes, a film that co-starred Toni Collete. Both actresses played two sisters who only had their love for shoes in common. Which ones? Jimmy Choo’s creations.
